Procrastnation
Famous comedian and, in general, funnyman Conan O'Brien was questioned by the Oxford Union and there is a question at the end that talks about how to get into comedy. He touched on this in his main interview, but this was more important.
He said that one should have a "body of work." Not for people to see but for yourself, to improve, to get over the hurdle of actually doing something. I try to have a body of work. I write stories about fictional countries, and I am program, like this site. Doing that allows you to refine your voice and your style while bringing it against new things. It is a unique thing to have. With entry-level jobs drying up, experience is like gold.
I, unfortunately, have been procrastinating on improving my body of work. School stuff needs completion, a book needs reading, a book needs writing- you get the gist. I have all these fun stuff to do, but a watch YouTube, why?. Even if I do start, going to the next step seems such a daunting process that the best thing to do is to press Alt-F4 and then start watching YouTube. This isn't even supposed to be the first article! I wanted to get something out. It is perplexing that this happens.
My theory is that creates a thing called mental inertia. An object at rest stays at rest; if you are not doing anything, and there is no incentive for you to do anything. It is something I have always been thinking about. When I am on socials, I usually start to feel a sense of dread or mush for every second I stay there, but I don't want to move away. That sucks. Moving to other sites is a way to free oneself, a way to learn more things that you ever could. Conventional social media benefits nothing if you learn.
There are other ways I have used to fix this. I plan my day before the day starts, so when my brain floods with thoughts, it is the big issue I have to tackle that day, regardless of whether it is possible within the given timeframe. Having something to get up for is very important for not getting into that mush state. This is short because I don't want this to be precedent. I want to make articles with stickers or a treasure hunt in the next. Anyone can write an article, most can't write an article that is also a game.
Sometimes we do just procrastinate because we can find that there is no point in doing something. Having a material incentive for a hobby, like money, is a bad idea to have. With new technologies, people will have to start thinking about what things mean to them. Sometimes you have to wonder why you are doing things. That thing, at least in my head, is to have fun.
